    Swimming Lessons

In 1913, the Toronto Public School Board accepted an offer from the Central YMCA to teach swimming to boys over the age of 11. The program was offered at no cost twice per week. This initiative was formalized in 1922 when the Parks Department began Toronto’s summer swim program at Carleton Public School. Under the guidance of the Secretary of the Public School Athletic Association, Mr. T.E. Johns, the school board took over the program in 1925. By 1950, 95% of pupils entering Toronto secondary schools were able to swim.
