    Physical Exercises

By 1881, physical exercises were practiced several times each day within the individual classrooms. These consisted mainly of calisthenics taught by the regular teacher and designed to improve posture, provide a mental break from studies and improve overall health. Conducted at several points during the day, Inspector Hughes urged the expansion of the program to 15 minutes every hour. Schools made great strides the following year and aimed to devote ten minutes per hour to calisthenics exercises.
