    Recreation for Children

While not formally taught in the schools, children were introduced to sports through organizations such as the YMCA which started youth clubs and organized games for children. Concern for the health and fitness of urban children also led to the establishment of recreational spaces and children’s programs in what was known as the Playground Movement. In 1908, the Board of Education opened supervised playgrounds which were paid for by the city at five schools.
