A Teacher’s Religious Affiliation in Doubt

On September 4, 1936, Grade 3 school teacher at Kent Street school, Margaret McQuhae, was fired. Neither her ability nor her character was in question; McQuhae was dismissed because of her “Roman Catholic” connections. It was the Toronto Board of Education’s policy not to engage Roman Catholics, but the case against McQuhae, raised by Trustee Gordon W. Armstrong, acting on constituents’ allegations, proved largely false. The assertions: McQuhae was a Roman Catholic, was a bridesmaid at a Roman Catholic wedding, and had a Roman Catholic boyfriend.
