The Strathcona Trust was the first national program for physical education in Canada. It was implemented in elementary and secondary schools as a joint venture between provincial departments of education and the federal military. Railway magnate and Canadian High Commissioner to Britain, Sir Donald Smith (Lord Strathcona) financed the program of physical training and military drill through accrued interest from a donated investment of $500,000. The Strathcona Trust was also to be used to establish cadet corps in the public schools.
